Handmaiden

5 October 2005

Had a letter from my kidney meister today. It made me laugh that his diagnosis started with achondroplasia before mentioning the left ureteric calculus (big bastard kidney stone in layman’s terms). Achondroplasia was also the first thing that the doc wrote in his notes when I sat down in his room, as if he’d finally cracked some 23 year medical mystery. The letter continues, referring to me as a “23 year old lady with achondroplasia”. I’d prefer “23 year old bit of crumpet with big green eyes”, but I guess we don’t always get what we want. Apparently the Dalai Lama says that’s the way it should be, but I’m not so sure.

Oh, and my mother called me someone’s handmaiden today.
