7 Days: Day 4 – Unexpected harvest
2 October 2007
One of my littlest pumpkins has long had a little bit of damage on him, but when I went out to check on my patch today I discovered that a mouse had been having a bit more of a nibble. I’d had my eye on this particular gourd being my jack o’ lantern for Halloween, so I decided to harvest it there and then to stop the mouse having any more of its fun. I had already tipped the damaged part up off the ground in an effort to keep it out of the rodent’s reach, but maybe the mouse is taller than I thought … oh great, now I’ve given myself the heebie jeebies with thoughts of giant mice roaming my vegetable patch in the dark. I’m trotting out there every night at the moment to stop slugs (and a snail last night) in their tracks. Surely at some point I have to start winning against them?
Anyway, I’m hoping that my first pumpkin will keep until Halloween so I can um and aah over what the hell to carve into it. Possibly with a bit of its skin missing it won’t keep that long, but if it doesn’t then all 1070g of it will just be cooked up for pumpkin muffins! Yummy.
