Square eyes
20 November 2008
Here I am, drifting about as usual, not getting anything from my to-do list done. Only now I have an excuse to give myself: I need to spend less time in front of the screen.
I’m suffering a bit of eye strain, which is giving me a headache between and around my eyes from time to time during the day. It’s nothing a couple of paracetamol and a cup of coffee can’t kill, but I need to take some time out to look at things that are further away, to give certain muscles around my eyes a break.
The trouble is that my interests away from using the computer for work are for the most part pretty closeup activities: knitting, reading and, erm, using the computer for fun. You see the problem? And so I find myself staring out of the window – at something far away – warming myself on the radiator. While my to-do list sits there by the computer – not being done.

Some time ago, during my stint at working hard at home all day in front of a screen, my computer was in front of a wall. When I moved and the computer had a window behind it, with a rather fabulous view, I suffered far, far less headaches and eyestrain. I’m sure it was because I could instantly look away from the screen and get a ‘long view look’ at something.
