Pansy Watch 2009
2 January 2009
One present I received this Christmas was a “Pansy in a tin”. It wasn’t labelled, but I think it was from Russ. The other half of his present being two huge jars of used tea bags and all kinds of other organic crap from his kitchen. Having now emptied one of the jars into my compost I can say that the mightily gross, syrupy liquid that also came out along with the tea bags, half red onion, red chili and spring onion tops was an especially lovely touch.
But anyway, the pansy. It is a magic pansy, because it lives in a tin and/or can. I’ve followed the instructions: removed the ring pull lid, wetted the weird stuff inside, opened the outlet on the bottom of the can and put the plastic lid over the bottom to catch the drips.
I am to keep the can in a room with a temperature between 0-40ÂșC. Naturally, I’m hoping that this will not be a problem. If it is, I may have things other than the germination of my pansy in a tin about which to worry.
The seeds will germinate in 5-10 days (can you feel the excitement?) and then the plants will blossom between 3-4 months. Or 3-4 days if Mum’s in charge of it.
So join me on this spectacular and exhilarating horticultural journey as I forget to water the weird stuff in the can, accidentally break bits off the plant and perhaps even knock it over at some point, causing a big mess.
Click for the set … which will grow as the pansy grows. Whoa, deep, man.

Did you know that BlogHer is offering 5 international scholarships to blogging activists overseas? You could come to the States for free! Because you’re super active in the fight for a greener planet. You’ve got the compost to prove it. Check out this link for more details.

…like the cat did to Mac’s Cactus-in-an-Egg that she brought home from her trip to San Diego last summer? And it even had several tiny little cactus seedlings in it. So. Cute. Damn. Cat. And to replace it was something like $30. Needless to say, we didn’t. :( Here’s hoping you have better luck with your pansy. But since you don’t have a cat, I’d say that you’re already ahead of the curve.

Hmmm, for a moment there, I thought you were being politically incorrect based on the title of your post.
