Where I’ll be next week
10 March 2009
All of a sudden I have some more travel plans. Cabin fever led me to email Lauren suggesting that we do something. Not that I had any clue what that something should be. I can’t think of everything, you know. Fortunately Lauren was able to take a breather from her day job of laundering money and remembered something that we had talked about some time ago: how about lunch in France?
Oh, if I must.
On Tuesday we’re taking the Eurostar train from Ebbsfleet to Lille, arriving just in time for lunch. Lauren knows Lille inside out and so has our eating venues planned already. Assuming we ever stop eating we’ll also be clicking away on our cameras before heading back to the UK in the evening. Quite possibly smelling of garlic.
But of course a day trip to France really isn’t enough for one week, so two days later I’m going to Salzburg for a night. I’ve been invited to a book presentation on the 19th and while I initially didn’t give the invitation any thought, because it’s kinda far away, my friend can put me up for the night, so it’ll be a welcome chance to catch up with him too.

Can I trade lives with you, just for a week or so? You can clean my house and read stories to Annalie…
No? Well, you can’t blame me for trying.

Where I’ll be next week. On Monday evening I shall be driving Sarah to Lauren’s house, so that they can go from there to catch the Eurostar on Tuesday morning. On Thursday I shall drive Sarah to Stansted Airport, from where she will fly to Salzburg. On Friday evening Susan and I will go to Stansted to collect her. Oh well, it gets me out of the house!

Oh! Your dad is funny. I see where you two get the humor, you bounce off each other.
I would love to try that week myself. We have no great train service. If I want to catch a train, I have to drive 90 miles and wait for the 5 am train, which might arrive at 9 am if we are lucky. . . even though tracks run past my house about two blocks away, no passenger trains stop here. OH America, why can’t you catch on to the efficiency of Europe’s train system?
sigh, I’ll be thinking of you with a bit o’ envy (I guess that is appropriate for a March theme?)

Hey Annie,
Have you ever seen the film “Bad Day at Black Rock?” That town has a railway running through it, but no train has stopped in four years, until the hero, Spencer Tracy, has cause to go there. Reminded me of your situation. A very good film if you have a chance to see it.
Eurostar is a high-speed (186 m.p.h.) train which runs between London and Paris and other European cities, via the Channel Tunnel.

It’s this book, about Hubert von Goisern, the musician whose website I run.
