Come Dine With … Suzy
17 June 2010
Last Saturday, while many others were watching the World Cup match of England against the USA, Helen, Lauren and I headed to Suzy’s for her Come Dine With Me evening. I had heard tell of decorations being put up, but beyond that what lay ahead was to be a surprise.
The dining room was beautifully festooned with bunting and balloons, a number of which endeavoured throughout the evening to escape into other parts of the house. Music was playing and menus and nibbles had been put out on the table. The theme was England and even the iTunes playlist consisted of only English artists. The one non-English act that turned up during the evening was summarily deleted mid-song, the modern day equivalent of being sent to the Tower.
“Take a photo of me in the light!” Lauren demanded. “No, not yet!” as I raised my camera … and then - shazzam! – there was her trademark photo face, ready for my lens.
Our hostess filled our glasses and made the final touches in the kitchen while we admired her table and menu, ate all her delicious crisps, took photos in the dazzling evening light and, menu in hand, recorded our first impressions on the laptop.
The first course looked very sophisticated: chicory leaves dotted with goats cheese and pine nuts and stilton and walnuts. There was also a honey and wholegrain mustard sauce for drizzling. Though it was so yummy I was more inclined to pour it. Perhaps straight into my mouth.
Our verdict on the starter:

I’m really enjoying this little series! Also, I’m thinking the four of you are pretty darned talented chefs to have taken on this project at all! :-) Now who’s that with the adorable Suzy in her adorable kitchen of adorableness?

That’s Clara, Suzy’s housemate/landlady – there’ll be a better sighting of her in the next installment.

[...] finished, let’s get back to what really matters: food. If you remember, we’d dealt with Suzy’s starter and we’re now on to the main course of beef wellington, cabbage, carrots and red wine gravy. [...]
