Early! I’m so sorry.
15 February 2012
Looking through my notebook, I found this note, written after I returned from Salzburg last November. On landing a little early it had been interesting to note the difference in attitude between the two airlines one can use to fly to and from Salzburg:
12.11.11 / Ryanair throws you into the tarmac, sounds an ear-splitting chime and shouts that you’re early. BA lands carefully and a well-spoken captain comes on the tannoy and apologises for any inconvenience that their early arrival may have caused for you and those picking you up.
That and the free cookie they give you on the flight are two of the reasons I’m likely to use BA again whenever I go to Salzburg. Oh yes, and the fact that I can check a bag free of charge and not carry a rucksack roughly the size of myself on my back is also a plus.
Not that I’m going to Salzburg any time soon; the next trip is to Bremen in a month’s time. One night, hand luggage only, no laptop – someone remind me to take my iPod – and the hope that I can get a few overnight bits and my camera into my shoulder bag without breaking my shoulder and that Ryanair just gets us there on time. I don’t think they have an on-time xylophone.

I fly United pretty exclusively for the same reasons. I prefer better treatment than low prices. It’s tough enough to travel these days without adding cattle-car treatment on top of it. BA and United aren’t perfect but they’re civil and that’s worth money to me.

Such ghastly treatment, and on your birthday of all days!
Please don’t feel the need to pack too lightly for Bremen; your trusty pack-horse will be with you should you need her :o)
